Take a Break!

Technology has quite literally saved us this year. It’s truly incredible. For some, it creates the flexibility to work and learn from home in order to stay safe, pay the bills, and continue an education. In our times of social distance and isolation, it allows us to connect with loved ones from afar. I get to eat dinner with my nephews while they blow me sloppy kisses and sing me Christmas songs they learned in preschool. The entertainment is endless!

Being plugged in all the time is also pretty draining. The screen time is endless; we go from work on one screen to free time on another. From the news cycle to instagram to online shopping. While working from home it can be easy to blur work/life boundaries as you’re “always available.” And everyone knows you are! It creates unrealistic expectations of ourselves and others.

Let’s not let that take over our entire lives. Yes, you still have a life, even during a pandemic! You still have boundaries and your time is to be respected. I’m reminded of my grandpa’s take on technology: “I don’t see why everyone’s always on their phones. If you really need to get a hold of me, just send me a telegram!” He was so good at being in the present moment.

Perhaps just take a moment to check in with yourself about your technology use. The content, format, motivation, and frequency. Even just a simple “Why am I using this right now?” can allow for some consideration of your choices. It’s difficult to adjust habits, especially with social media, when you may be using them as an escape or distraction to avoid feeling sad, lonely, or bored. Mindless scrolling and obsessive checking tend to leave you depleted, rather than rejuvenated. Pay attention to your emotions here, as they often drive decisions.

If what you’re doing on your phone is bringing you joy, go for it. If you’re feeling worn down, maybe take a break. You deserve to unplug and tend to your other needs in more mindful ways. A walk, meditation, a book, some quiet. It does wonders for your overall well being.

If you need further inspiration, channel that inner Eliza Hamilton that lives within you, and sing along :)
